How do the costumes, setting, and overall production of the film adaptation of As You Like It change, develop, or refine your understanding of Shakespeare’s play?

It is criticized that the setting changing from sixteenth century France to nineteen century Japan does not give importance to the play because after all westerners are those who take up the majority parts.

Every adaptation is a bold move. It has to make sense with the flow of the original play. The setting of this version uses the historical background of Japanese’s open up trade to the West, a time when monarchy and strict patriarchy are essential. Shakespearen literature is usually regarded as the transcendence over time. It bears universal themes and influence which are a foresight to the later generations. The adaptation of ‘As you like it’ shows that even the oriental setting and time changes do not hinder the original play from survival and development.
